Jim Klauzer did not start out working with drip irrigation. But that has been his focus since 2000, when he joined Clearwater Supply which sells and designs drip systems.

Prior to that, Klauzer was a research agronomist for a variety of pesticide makers. The last pesticide company he worked for was having a merger and wanted Klauzer to move to Georgia or Alabama.

A sales agronomist, Klauzer decided he wanted to stay in the Treasure Valley and responded to an ad for the position with Clearwater Supply.

While 2016 brought some relief to the Western drought, many areas are still experiencing historic water shortages, with no reprieve in sight. From the Colorado River to Lake Mead, water supplies are shrinking while demand increases, thus driving water users to look elsewhere for their water, in many cases underground.

Last year, the Irrigation Association hosted the first drought summit in conjunction with the 2015 Irrigation Show and Education Conference in Long Beach, California. We are excited to not only hold our second summit in Las Vegas, Nevada, but also partner with the National Ground Water Association for the 2016 Drought Summit.

In a webinar series produced by the University of California, Davis, Toro’s Inge Bisconer addressed some agriculture irrigation responses to the ongoing drought plaguing much of the western United States.

The current drought has forced water usage into the spotlight. This is particularly true for California’s agriculture industry. In the webinar “The Agriculture Irrigation Industry Responds to the California drought,” Inge discusses the many water and cost saving benefits that many growers have enjoyed by using drip irrigation over other irrigation methods.

Irrigation water efficiency is a priority for producers in the United States and is impacted by field uniformity. Uniformity issues may result in over irrigation, however, new technology and science can bring potential solutions.

This Monday, July 25, Western Growers Association will host a Lunch & Learn webinar that will highlight findings of a recent study conducted in key produce regions in California and provide participants with some practical ideas to address differences in uniformity and efficiency.

Water use efficiency has long been a priority for produce growers in the United States, but with diminishing water resources there has been a renewed urgency to improve efficiency in irrigation systems.

Western Growers, in concert with JR Simplot Water Services and The Toro Company, recently concluded a study to evaluate distribution uniformity in drip irrigation systems in key produce regions in California, including both the Oxnard Plain and the Coachella Valley. This study was done in cooperation with Western Growers members who were interested in water efficiency and will be published soon to provide useful information to those operating drip systems.

Newer irrigation systems like drip and subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) have been used by cutting-edge alfalfa growers for quite some time.

Even with the proven benefits, many growers struggle with the idea of moving away from traditional irrigation practices to something unfamiliar. How much will the conversion cost? What kind of return can I expect? Will this affect the number of cuttings each year? And perhaps one of the biggest questions: How do I control rodents?

Rodents cause yield loss and crop damage if not managed

Rodents are a concern for all alfalfa growers, regardless of what irrigation method is used. Pests like mice, voles and gophers cause yield loss and crop damage when not properly managed.
